Make Way for Berthe Weill
Make Way for Berthe Weill, Grey Art Gallary
Join us for a private tour of Make Way for Berthe Weill: Art Dealer of the Parisian Avant-Garde. Weill (1865-1951) was the first woman dealer in modern art. She championed fledgling masters of modern art early in their careers, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, André Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy, Georges Braque and Fernand Léger — as well as lesser-known names such as Suzanne Valadonand Émilie Charmy. (Of nearly 400 exhibitions mounted by Weill, almost one-third included female artists.) Yet her role in early 20th-century modernism has been omitted from most historical accounts.
This exhibition comprised of 110 paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures—many of which were shown at her gallery during the first four decades of the 20th century plus a selection of letters, exhibition catalogs, and other documents is intended to correct that omission. It chronicles Weill’s contributions to modern art as a gallerist and demonstrates the remarkable achievements of a singular figure who overcame sexism, antisemitism, and economic hardship in her quest to promote emerging artists.
The tour will take place on Wednesday, February 5, at 11:30 at the Grey Art Gallary at 18 Cooper Square, a short walk south from the Astor Place stop on the 6 train. There is a charge of $5 per person, and the group is limited to 15. To register, please click here.
